Cybersecurity is one of the fastest-growing fields in technology. Every day, individuals, businesses, hospitals, schools, and governments rely on digital systems, making cybersecurity more important than ever.
Recognizing this growing demand, the College Board introduced AP Cybersecurity, the newest addition to its Advanced Placement program. The course gives high school students an opportunity to explore how modern systems are protected and how cybersecurity professionals think when defending them.
What Is AP Cybersecurity?
AP Cybersecurity is an introductory college-level course for high school students. Rather than focusing primarily on programming, it teaches students how digital systems are attacked, protected, and managed securely.
Although many people associate cybersecurity with “hacking,” the course is much broader. Students learn how attacks happen, how organizations defend against them, and how security professionals identify risks and make informed decisions.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is ideal for students who enjoy technology and want to explore cybersecurity before college. It is especially valuable for those considering Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related fields.
No previous cybersecurity experience is required. Some programming or hacking experience is certainly helpful, but the course is designed for beginners while still offering enough depth to keep students with prior experience engaged.
What Will Students Learn?
The course is divided into five units:
- Introduction to Security
- Securing Spaces
- Securing Networks
- Securing Devices
- Securing Applications and Data
Students learn about topics such as phishing, social engineering, malware, authentication, encryption, firewalls, wireless security, secure software development, SQL injection, data protection, and risk analysis.
More importantly, they learn to think like cybersecurity professionals by analyzing security incidents, identifying vulnerabilities, and recommending practical solutions.
How Can Students Benefit?
If you’re passionate about cybersecurity, this course is an excellent starting point. If you’re interested in computer science but want exposure beyond programming, it provides a different perspective on computing.
Even students who don’t plan to work in technology will benefit. As more of our lives move online, understanding digital security has become an essential life skill.
How Does AP Cybersecurity Fit with the Other AP Computer Science Courses?
Many students ask how AP Cybersecurity compares with AP Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) and AP Computer Science A (AP CSA). The good news is that there isn’t a “correct” order; they complement each other.
- AP CSP introduces the foundations of computing.
- AP CSA focuses on programming in Java.
- AP Cybersecurity focuses on protecting systems, networks, applications, and data.
You can take AP Cybersecurity before, after, or alongside the other AP computer science courses, depending on your interests.
Who Should Take AP Cybersecurity?
I recommend this course for students in Grade 9 and above who are interested in technology.
Whether you’re considering a future in Computer Science or Cybersecurity, or simply want to become more knowledgeable about the digital world, AP Cybersecurity is an excellent choice. A strong AP score may also earn university credit, depending on the institution.
